There are so many podcasts out in the world these days, it’s hard to sort through the noise to find the gems. Thanks to Ketshop, I’ve been doing a deep dive into the parent-podcast universe lately. I’m on the hunt for reasonable parenting advice that addresses the issues we address: independent kids, chores, financial responsibility, family harmony, and respect. Although I’m doing research for professional purposes, of course I’m also gaining a lot of insights into my own parenting style.
Below, I’m sharing some of my favorite podcasters so maybe you’ll have an ah-ha moment as well!
Her Dinero Matters
Her Dinero Matters is a motivational podcast. Conducted in both English and Spanish, host Jen Hempill tells stories of women overcoming financial hurdles and the lessons they learn along the way. I loved hearing success stories from women of all walks of life, it’s truly inspiring! I recently spoke with Jen on the podcast about how we can empower our children to be financially savvy, stay tuned for when the episode airs!
Minimalist Moms Podcast
I had the pleasure of interviewing with host Diane Boden not once, but twice for my episode about Teaching Self-Regulation (E:248). Minimalist Moms Podcast focuses on reducing the noise in your home – whether that’s clutter, over-scheduling, or mental loads. There are some really great episodes that have changed the way I live day-to-day.
We Can Do Hard Things with Glennon Doyle
Glennon Doyle, author of Untamed, co-hosts with Abby Wambach and Amanda Doyle. Somehow, they manage to be vulnerable, funny, and insightful all at once. A holiday episode struck home with me: What if – instead of doing/buying/decorating/hosting all of the things – you ARE the thing? Your presence is enough. Respecting others’ presence is enough. Love this show.
The Parenting Reset Show
Therese Connolly, LCSW hosts this show for parents of tweens and teens. Her insightful conversations with leading parenting experts help identify the pressures and expectations placed on both parents and their kids. I loved the “Peaceful Discipline” episode that focused on how to navigate back talk and improve your connection with your kids. Highly recommend this podcast!
Parent Footprint with Dr. Dan
Host Dr. Dan is a psychologist, author and parent. His podcast focuses on raising thoughtful kids by becoming mindful parents. Topics range from sleep to current events, and even dispel some harmful assumptions we make about parenthood. I personally connected to The Mother Brain episode, which focuses on the myth of “maternal instinct” and the misogynistic repercussions in society. Good thinking material!
Good Inside with Dr. Becky
Host Dr. Becky tackles a reader question each week, identifying the deeper issue at play and providing actionable tips to create a stronger bond between parent and child. The episode “I Wish I’d Had That As a Kid” struck home for me. It focused on how parents are sometimes over-eager to help, and end up turning an interest into an obligation. As a parent, I’m trying to learn to take the passenger seat in my kids’ lives.
Modern Mom Problems
Tara Clark hosts this casual conversation-style podcast. Each episode, she and her guests discuss a diverse set of topics, like mental health, co-parenting, and screen time. I loved the “Reparenting Yourself” episode, which focuses on how our own childhood can affect our parenting style. The show focuses on creating a safe, clear set of boundaries for every member of the family and I’m all for it!
The Good Enough Mother Podcast
Sociologist Dr. Sophie Brock breaks down both the social and individual experiences of motherhood. On the “Mom Rage” episode, Dr. Sophie and guest Minna Dublin discussed the taboo of talking about losing your cool as a mother. The difficulty of candidly expressing your emotions resonated with me, even though I *ahem* have definitely never yelled at my kids.
Curious Neuron Podcast
Dr. Cindy Hovington is the founder of Curious Neuron. She takes a scientific approach to our most worrisome parenting issues, and sheds light on why parenting is so hard. On Episode 64, guest Cheryl Gotthelf discusses when screen time can be beneficial for kids. She gets into age appropriate TV, commercials, and setting healthy boundaries. I definitely took some notes on this one!
Tahoe’s Connection For Families Podcast
TCF has always been near and dear to our hearts – this local non-profit provides early childhood education and parenting resources. Founder Laurean Meyer has been a guiding light for our family and a mentor for Ketshop’s development. This informal podcast helps young families survive those early years, and sets a framework for raising a respectful and loving family.
Unruffled Podcast with Janet Lansbury
This is a very popular podcast, and for good reason. Although it’s aimed at younger children (babies and toddlers), Janet Lansbury sets the stage for treating your children with respect from the start. Much of her content focuses on releasing parental control and empowering children to find their own path, which sounds a lot easier than it really is!
Whew! I could go on and on… these are just a few of my favorites at the moment. I hope this list is helpful and you can find some voices that resonate with you. I’m always on the lookout for new podcasts, so if you have something you’ve been loving (parenting-related or not) please share with me in the comments!
